47th Annual Juried Student Exhibition

Hayes, will be featured in the Annual Juried Student Exhibition at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts from January 13 - March 25, 2023. This will mark the 47th year for the annual exhibition, presented by the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History.

The Juried Student Exhibition is an experiential learning opportunity for the students of the UAB Department of Art and Art History. The show is open to all students who took art and art history courses in the past two years.

Donté K. Hayes, exhibition juror and professional artist stated, "I want to first thank the University of Alabama Birmingham and AEIVA for inviting me as the visiting artist and the honor of being the juror of the Student Juried Exhibition. I come to the task as juror with no preconceived agenda or expectations. With that said, I was very impressed with the quality of technical ability, craft, and content submitted for consideration. It was a very daunting task to conceive a cohesive show that flows and reveals conversations among each work due to so many deserving works to consider. However, themes did emerge, with works exploring vulnerability, representation and finding comfort in learning to love oneself. Lastly, it was great to see so many engaged students asking interesting questions about the jurying process and wanting advice on being a professional artist while in school and after graduation. I look forward to celebrating with the students during the reception in January.”

Donté K. Hayes graduated summa cum laude from Kennesaw State University at Kennesaw, Georgia with a BFA in Ceramics and Printmaking with an art history minor. Hayes received his MA and MFA with honors from the University of Iowa and is the 2017 recipient of the University of Iowa Arts Fellowship. Recent art exhibitions include group shows at the Trout Museum of Art, the Newark Museum of Art, and the 2021 Atlanta Biennial at the Atlanta Contemporary in Georgia. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, The Gibbes Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Newark Museum of Art, the Wellin Museum of Art, the Stanley Museum of Art, the Des Moines Art Center, and the Institute Museum of Ghana, among others.

Donté is a 2019 Ceramics Monthly Magazine Emerging Artists and Artaxis Fellow. Hayes has been in residence at the Bemis Center, Township 10, Penland School of Craft, the Hambidge Center, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts. Donté is the Grand Prize winner of the “Coined in the South: 2022” exhibition at the Mint Museum. He is also the 2019 winner of the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern art from the Gibbes Museum of Art. Donté K. Hayes is represented by Mindy Solomon Gallery in Miami, Florida.
