Industrial Distribution major William Coleman has been awarded the 2023 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship opens a new website, a prestigious scholarship that provides funds for students to study abroad while in college.
He is one of six UAB students to receive the honor this year. Sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs opens a new website, the Gilman Scholarship awards up to $5,000 to offset the costs of studying and interning abroad.
Coleman is currently in Seville, Spain studying the art and culture of flamenco dance and social psychology.
“I plan to travel for work, and I believe speaking Spanish would make me a better candidate and well-rounded person in general,” he said. “I also chose Spain because I have never been to Europe, and I wanted to get an in-person feel for the country.”
So far, his excursions have included the Plaza de España, Seville Cathedral, and Maria Luisa Park. He also plans to head to the beach and watch a bullfight before leaving Spain at the end of June.
Coleman said his first few days studying abroad were a culture shock, but he quickly adapted.
“As I got more adjusted, I fell in love with where I am,” he said. “I have met some amazing people, seen some amazing monuments, and much more. I am so excited and thankful for this experience.”
A native of Mobile, Coleman is a Collat Scholar, a Peer Success Mentor, and an Honors College student.
