English Language Programs (ELP) is a professional resource for English language learning and cross-cultural training in the Birmingham metropolitan area. The ELP offers a range of ESL courses to students, area residents, business people, local corporations, and international visitors.

UAB has partnered with INTO University Partnerships to offer English language resources on campus, expand access to a UAB degree worldwide, and provide customized Pathway programs that support ambitious international students’ transition to living and learning in the United States.
Academic English Program
The Academic English (AE) program at INTO UAB offers part-time and full-time English language study for students who wish to quickly improve their academic, professional, or general English skills. It offers excellent preparation for students who are planning to enter INTO Pathways or UAB undergraduate or graduate study. Students who wish to study full-time in the AE can receive support in the application process for an F-1 student visa. The Academic English Program of INTO UAB is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).

Pathway programs provide a bridge between English language study and full-time university enrollment. During a Pathway program, students continue to improve their English language skills while also enrolling in university coursework that applies towards their future degree program at UAB.

The academic management team of INTO UAB provides academic advising for direct entry international students. Most specifically, we support direct entry students in the process of registration. We also provide support for international students who need to be connected to resources to support their academic success and acculturation.

Students receive personalized academic advising and support services throughout the programs of study, learning in small classes taught by English language teaching professionals and university faculty. Participants in these programs are UAB students who have full access to all university facilities, including recreation centers, libraries, clubs, and on-campus and sports events.
Specialized English Programs
One of the hallmarks of the English Language Programs at UAB is the ability to design and implement a range of specialized programs for various university and corporate needs, including corporate tutoring, workplace language training programs, short-term specialized programs for visiting students or scholars at UAB, and cross-cultural training programs. In addition, we offer an 8-week English Program for students who would like an early start at UAB for their English language training before joining one of our other programs.

There are multiple avenues for current UAB degree-seeking students, scholars, faculty, and employees who are non-native English speakers to receive support for the continued development of their English language skills. We specialize in resources for individuals whose first language may not be English or who have gaps in their English skills as a result of learning two or more languages at the same time.

Tutoring in English language skills is available to INTO UAB students as well as current UAB degree-seeking students, scholars, faculty, and employees who are non-native English speakers. Skills taught include writing, grammar, speaking, listening, reading, and pronunciation. Tutoring can be on-going or as-needed.
