Dr. Elizabeth J. Liptrap grew up in Maryland and received a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She received a medical doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2011. During medical school, she was an Alpha Omega Alpha Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellow and received awards for excellence in Biological Chemistry, Surgery and Neurosurgery. She was also awarded membership in the Gold Humanism Honor Society. Upon graduation from medical school, she received the Faculty Gold Medal for Outstanding Qualifications for the Practice of Medicine.

Dr. Liptrap then entered her neurological surgery internship and residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center under the direction of Dr. Howard Eisenberg from 2011-2018. During her residency, she completed an enfolded fellowship in Neuroendovascular Surgery under the direction of Dr. Dheeraj Gandhi from 2015-2016. Upon completion of her neurological surgery residency, Dr. Liptrap was asked to stay at the University of Maryland Medical Center for a combined fellowship and instructorship in Neuroendovascular Surgery from 2018-2019. Dr. Liptrap then joined the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology. Her clinical practice includes the operative and endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular disease, as well as brain tumors, general neurosurgery and neurosurgical critical care. Her clinical and research interests focus on cerebrovascular disorders.
