UAB Gospel Choir presents reunion concert Nov. 13

For its 22nd anniversary, choir alumni from throughout the state and country will journey home to join members in concert and bid farewell to founding director Kevin Turner.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Gospel Choir will present its 22nd anniversary concert, and bid farewell to founding director Kevin P. Turner, on Monday, Nov. 13.

Current members and alumni from throughout the state and country will make the journey home to participate in the concert and bid farewell to Turner. Turner will leave the university in January 2018. 

The concert will take place at 7 p.m., in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Jemison Concert Hall. Tickets are $7 general admission; $6 for UAB students, faculty and staff; and $6 each for groups of 20 or more with advance purchase required. Call 205-975-2787 for ticket information.

Concert-goers are invited to arrive early to take commemorative pictures with the director. Concert hall doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the first 40 people will receive a complimentary copy of “Prosper,” the new single released by Turner in October. The 90-minute concert will feature chart-topping music from the choir’s collection of recordings, crowd favorites and an uplifting memorial tribute to members of the choir who have passed away. Performing arts troupe “Workmanship Incorporated” is the special guest artist. Birmingham-based recording artists Kyndra Stoudimire and Harrel D. Young Williams will also join the UAB Gospel Choir on stage.

The Givens Foundation will announce the 2017 recipient of the Dr. Mildred Givens Scholarship for Excellence in Education. Freda Givens will present the award to a deserving member of the choir during the concert.
