UAB’s genetics clinics have moved to new clinical space in Children’s of Alabama and the Kirklin Clinic from their previous location in the Hug Kaul Human Genetics Building. Pediatric clinics transitioned to the sixth floor of the Dearth Tower at Children’s in October. Adult genetics clinics are now located on the first floor of the Kirklin Clinic as of Nov. 15.
Clinic appointments can continue to be made by calling 205-934-4983.
“We are extremely pleased that we now offer our patients clinical facilities closely integrated with the full range of medical services at UAB and Children’s,” said Bruce Korf, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department of Genetics. “Patients and their families will find the new clinics provide the same outstanding care they have previously enjoyed with enhanced access to imaging facilities, pharmacy, laboratories and other medical providers they may require.”
The UAB Department of Genetics is a national leader in research and patient care for a wide range of genetic conditions, including neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis, cancer genetics and more.
Other conditions for which clinical evaluations and genetic counseling are available include: Down syndrome, biochemical genetics/inherited disorders of metabolism, cancer genetics, cardiovascular, cleft lip/cleft palate, chromosome abnormalities, craniofacial disorders, deafness, Huntington disease, lysosomal storage disorders, prenatal and preconception genetics, skeletal dysplasias, and tuberous sclerosis, and risk of breast, ovarian and colon cancers, among others.
The department also maintains the Undiagnosed Diseases Program, which seeks to meet the needs of patients with severe, chronic medical conditions for which a diagnosis has not been made despite extensive efforts. Children referred to the Undiagnosed Diseases Program will be seen at Children’s of Alabama and adults at the Kirklin Clinic.
