In this new position, Walt's responsibilities will include writing stories about major gifts and donors. He will also lead editorial, communications, and marketing projects for Advance Jessica Jonesment. Walt will serve as the point person for the Development, Annual Giving, Advancement Services, and Corporate and Foundation Relations teams. He will continue to handle proposals.

"Walt's a talented storyteller and strong project manager, and he's been an integral part of the Office of Donor Relations and Engagement for seven years," Senior Director of Communications Katie McDowell said. "His background in journalism and donor relations and his knowledge of UAB best practices made him the obvious choice to serve in a leadership role in Advancement Communications."

Walt has been on the Advancement team for seven years and was named assistant director of donor relations and engagement in April 2022. Prior to joining UAB, walt was a copywriter for BW&Co. and online editor for Weld for Birmingham. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Birmingham-Southern College in 2012.
