A new scholarship will help high-achieving students who are the first in their families to attend college and earn their degrees.
The William Randolph Hearst Foundation has committed funds to support the Hearst Foundation First Generation Scholars Fund in Public Health, providing scholarships to help high-achieving students—the first in their families to attend college—earn their degrees. This contribution continues the Foundation’s commitment to UAB; in 2000, it provided funds to establish The William Randolph Hearst Foundation Endowed Scholarship in the School of Public Health for graduate students from underrepresented, low-income, and minority populations. Together, the two initiatives will help increase the diversity of the field of public health and the development, dissemination, and application of knowledge to prevent disease and promote human health.
HealthSouth Corporation (now known as Encompass Health) has established the HealthSouth Endowed Scholars Fund for Diversity in Rehabilitation Sciences in the School of Health Professions. The Birmingham-based company, a national leader in both inpatient rehabilitation and home-based care, provided the gift to support students demonstrating financial need from disadvantaged backgrounds who enroll in UAB’s occupational or physical therapy program.
