The UAB Summer Band is a community group comprised of adult amateur and professional musicians from the metropolitan Birmingham area. The band rehearses on Monday nights throughout June and performs an annual July 4th concert in front of Bartow Arena. Interested musicians should contact Dr. Sean Murray (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ), Director of Bands.
The UAB Symphony Band was formed in 2006 to accommodate the growth in musicianship of the UAB Bands’ students. This group contains both music majors as well as non-music majors who simply love the act of creating music in the wind band setting. Emphasis is placed on developing outstanding tone quality, solid intonation, technical proficiency, and ensemble musicality. The Symphony Band performs 1-2 concerts each semester at the beautiful Alys Stephens Center adjacent to the music building — UAB’s Hulsey Center. The Symphony Band can also be heard annually at a holiday concert given for senior adults at a local church and at the spring commencement of UAB each year.
Auditions for the chair placement in the ensemble are held during the first week of classes in the fall and spring semesters. Audition music is available in the Band Office (Hulsey 208) one week before the auditions begin. Auditions are open to all interested university students. The Symphony Band meets on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:00-3:15.

The UAB Wind Symphony is comprised of the finest wind and percussion students from inside and outside the Department of Music. The ensemble performs in the Alys Stephens Center two times each semester. The literature played by the UAB Wind Symphony reflects a great variety and high level of musicianship. The musical repertoire includes the finest wind band literature as well as significant orchestral transcriptions.
The Wind Symphony has performed at such prestigious events as the state conference of the Alabama Music Educators Association, the Southern Division conference of the College Band Directors National Association, in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall at the Percy Grainger Festival, and at Washington DC’s Lincoln Memorial. In addition to the regular concerts given on campus, the Wind Symphony performs an annual spring tour in various locations throughout Alabama and our region.
