BioBridge 2021 for Rising 9th Grade Students

Two One-Week Sessions offered

Dates: June 21-25, 2021
July 26-30, 2021

Cost: $250.00 per session – GEARUP Scholarships available. No Cost to Student

Session Times: 9:00am to 3:00pm daily

Program Description:

SSI BioBridge for GU-JC students will be a week-long course that will provide hands-on experiences covering the fundamentals of cellular and molecular biology and biotechnology using hands-on laboratory techniques. Students will get a head-start on 9th grade biology content in the context of cancer research. Students will participate in daily hands-on labs, learn from real cancer biologists, and create a summative project. SSI Bio-Bridge is open to rising 9th grade students only. Research projects and experimentation include:

  • Modeling cellular division and growth pathways
  • Cell culture and plating techniques
  • Transforming bacterial DNA
  • Designing and conducting experiments to understand the origins of cancer
  • Seminars and interactive discussions with UAB, federally funded research faculty
  • A community action project and much more!

 

Summer Science Institute for Rising 10th Grade
Students SSI-I: Fundamentals of Cellular and Molecular Biology

June 14 - 18, 2021

Cost: $250.00 per session – GEARUP Scholarships available. No Cost to Student

Session Times: 8:00am to 3:00pm daily
Program Description SSI-I:
Fundamentals of Cellular and Molecular Biology is a week-long course that will provide instruction covering the fundamentals of cellular and molecular biology and biotechnology 2 using hands on laboratory techniques. SSI I will be open to students who have finished 9th grade and are rising 10th grade GU-JC students. Research projects and experimentation include:

  •  Chemical methods to differentiate bacteria
  •  Identifying the genetic basis of brain disorders
  •  Extraction of genomic DNA
  •  Seminars and interactive discussions with UAB, federally funded research faculty
  •  Simulate drug discovery for flu prevention, COVID-19 and much more!

 

Computer Science and Engineering for rising 9th and 10th Grade Students
Two One-Week Sessions offered

Dates: June 21-25, 2021 (Game Programming)
July 26-30, 2021 (Computer and Electrical Engineering)

Cost: $250.00 per session – GEARUP Scholarships available. No Cost to Student

  •  Gain a basic foundation of programming in C#
  •  Learn the basics of Game programing with Unity3D
  •  Learn Basic Game Design Concepts and the Basics of 3D Modeling
  •  Learn basic and advanced programming concepts.
  •  Learn how to layout and design circuits using Arduinos.
  •  Gain the skills needed to change the world around you.
  •  Build a strong foundation for learning programing, computer engineering and electrical engineering.
  •  Learn to use Open-Source software and hardware to expand your world. The second week is based on the foundation of the first week. However, students can take either camp individually.


CORD Summer Program Refund Policy
CORD has established the following refund policy for students who cancel, or do not attend as registered.

  •  Cancellation at least 30 days prior to registered camp start date – 100% refund minus $50 administration fee.
  •  Cancellation at least two weeks prior to registered camp start date – 75% refund
  •  Cancellation within two weeks of registered camp start date 50% refund
  •  No Show and no communication – 0% refund

CORD understands that there may be extenuating circumstances such as illness or family emergencies. It is requested that in such instances CORD is contacted at 205-934-5171 to make arrangements to attend another Camp if available. Otherwise, the aforementioned refund policy is administered
