UAB offers departmental, performance, and more scholarship opportunities to admitted and current students. Students interested in these scholarships should complete the BSMART Scholarship Application in the Blazer Scholarship Management and Resource Tool (BSMART). Completing the application submits student information to multiple departments and units on campus for scholarship consideration.

Students can complete the BSMART Scholarship Application beginning August 1.  The BSMART Application submission deadline is March 1.

  • Merit Scholarships

How do I accept my merit scholarship in BSMART?

    1. Visit edu/bsmart and select the “Access BSMART” link.
    2. Select the “Students” box on the BSMART homepage.
    3. Enter your Blazer ID and password.
    4. Select the “My Awards” link in the BSMART tool bar.
    5. Under the “Next Steps” heading, you should see the “Accept/Decline Award” drop-down menu.

I am a current student without a merit scholarship at UAB. Can I qualify for a first-year freshman, transfer, or international scholarship?

Merit scholarships are only available to entering freshmen, transfer, and international students who are admitted to UAB by the scholarship deadline. Once you enroll in UAB coursework, you can no longer be considered.

How is my merit scholarship renewed?

Renewal decisions are made once per year, after the spring semester. To renew a merit scholarship, students must:

    • Earn a minimum of 24 total credit hours at UAB during the fall and spring semesters of each academic year. (Grades/notations of F, I, N, or W cannot be applied toward the 24-hour requirement.)
    • Maintain a cumulative UAB of 3.0 or higher.

    When will my scholarship disburse?

Merit scholarships disburse on the first day of classes for each semester. The scholarship allotment may not be reflected onto your student account until that time. If you have any courses that begin mid-semester and your allotment did not disburse, please reach out to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Note: Students cannot receive more than one merit scholarship allotment per semester.

When is my tuition and fee scholarship adjusted?

Tuition and fee scholarships are adjusted after the Add/Drop date each semester. Adjusting scholarships is a manual process. Therefore, you will not see it update automatically on the Add/Drop date, but the adjustments will be completed before the second payment deadline.

What should I do if my scholarship is cancelled?

Cancellation notifications will be sent via UAB email. The email will also contain instructions for submitting a scholarship appeal, if needed (e.g., to explain extenuating circumstances that impacted your grades and/or inform us of academic forgiveness being requested, but not yet processed).

Note: The submission of an appeal does not guarantee approval.

  • Merit Scholarship Appeals

What are the reasons to submit a scholarship appeal?

A scholarship appeal is a request made by a student to do one of the following:

    • Move an allotment to a summer term
    • Receive allotment due to ABM schedule (registered for less than 12 UAB undergraduate hours)
    • Graduating senior enrolled in less than 12 credit hours
    • Request remaining allotments due to early graduation
    • Appeal the cancellation of scholarship
    • Defer allotment(s) to future term
    • Study abroad/ internship/ Co-op

Note: If a student is not enrolled full-time (at least 12 UAB undergraduate hours), the scholarship will not disburse unless the student has an approved merit scholarship appeal for the semester.

I completed the Financial Aid Appeal Form with the Office of Financial Aid. Do I need to submit a merit scholarship appeal with the Office of Undergraduate Scholarships as well?

Yes, students must submit a merit scholarship appeal to request an exception for a merit scholarship. The Financial Aid Appeal Form is only applicable for financial aid awards.

When is the deadline to submit a merit scholarship appeal?
