About the Program

What's the reason for certain diseases and birth defects? At UAB, we can teach you about the impact of cell, molecular, and developmental biology on our lives. Earning a PhD will help prepare you for a career in academia, research, scientific writing, law, or forensics.

To succeed in this field, we believe you should become a well-rounded expert. You’ll get to network with professors and researchers from many different disciplines as you get your education. Your curriculum will consist of your core classes, as well as lab rotations, journal clubs, and grant-writing courses. You'll learn about topics such as genetic analysis, biological organization, biochemistry and metabolism, stem cell biology, and biostatistics. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with faculty in innovative research laboratories across our campus and the School of Medicine.
