About the Program

The future of health care is changing, and understanding genetics can unlock treatments for rare diseases, improve drug therapy, and fight cancer. As a researcher, you can join in on the emerging approach to health care known as precision medicine. We can give you the training you need for a career as a researcher in academia, industry, medicine, and more.

Because of the nature of this industry, we believe your education should include hands-on experiences in state-of-the-art molecular techniques learning about gene structure, expression, and function in diverse experimental systems. You'll study cellular organelles, cells, and tissues from a variety of model organisms such as mice, Drosophila, Caenorhabditis elegans, Zebrafish, and human samples. In addition, you'll collaborate with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty as you network with biological scientists at UAB and the Hudson Alpha Institute of Biotechnology. Finally, we'll give you every opportunity to work with our program leadership and mentors every day in both classroom and experimental settings.
