About the Program

If you're interested in developing new treatments for diseases, we need you to first become an expert on how disease works on a molecular level. We want to give you the skills you need for a career in medical research, academia, industry, and education.

This program is critically important to us here at UAB. That's why more than one-third of our graduate biomedical sciences faculty are directly affiliated with it. These faculty members represent various schools, departments, and research centers within UAB. And their interests run the gamut, from molecules to whole organisms to disease processes, and more. To begin, your core coursework will cover a broad array of interdisciplinary subjects related to the pathobiology and molecular basis of human diseases. You'll take classes on topics such as pharmacology, biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology. You'll also have hands-on experiences during your lab rotations to explore and identify your research interests. Finally, as a member of our graduate student community, you'll have a bountiful network opportunities that will serve you well in your career.
