About the Program

Ready to make breakthroughs and solve some of health care's biggest problems? Our students conduct innovative research that is changing the medical field as we know it. A PhD in Biomedical Engineering will position you to be a leader in this emerging discipline.

Like you, we think improving health care means making scientific discoveries, finding solutions, and advancing technologies using quantitative methods. With these goals in mind, we've developed a program that will prepare you for a career in either industry or academia. Your 51 hour coursework requirement will include Engineering Analysis, Quantitative Physiology, Principles of Scientific Integrity, at least one biostatistics course, and three semesters of biomedical engineering seminars. You'll also take life sciences, biomedical engineering, or mathematics electives. Finally you will complete and defend a dissertation and publish at least three original research articles as first author. Best of all, as a PhD student, you'll have access to our state-of-the-art facilities so you can conduct experiments, computer simulations, and produce lab-based projects.
