About the Program

As a chemist, you're already prepared to create innovative developments that can shape the 21st century. But the reaction you get from employers when you have a PhD from UAB on your resume, well, we suggest you see it for yourself.

What will make you successful is what makes us successful. We’re a global leader in medical teaching and research, and we maintain strong ties to the biomedical research community within the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. That means we have renowned experts in a diverse array of topics such as inorganic, organic, polymer, physical, analytical, bioanalytical, and biophysical chemistry working day and night whose breakthroughs have global implications. They're also your teachers. Not to mention, because we're home to the Central Alabama High Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility and the Center for Chemical Synthesis and Analysis, you get access to labs studying mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, biophysical spectroscopy, and bioenergetics. Your graduate mentor and our graduate research committee will sit down with you to help you map out your individual course requirements. To finish the program, you're required to complete a departmental seminar, as well as write and defend a research dissertation.
