About the Program

You’re a passionate educator with a master’s degree, and you’re ready to expand your expertise at teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Whether your goal is to teach children or adults how to read, write, understand, and speak English, we can help prepare you for the next step in your career.

Before you begin to earn your EdS-TESOL, you’ll need to determine whether you want to pursue the certification track or the professional track. We’ve designed each track to complement your education background and existing certifications. So, for instance, if you already hold Class A certification in any teaching field from the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE), you’ll complete the certification track and earn Class AA certification. Or, if you don’t hold Class A certification in a teaching field from the ALSDE but you have a master’s degree in education or TESOL, your best option would be completing the online professional track—and earning a UAB Graduate Certificate in Teaching Multilingual Learners or in Teaching English as an Additional Language. Both of the EdS-TESOL tracks require a minimum of 30 hours to complete and include courses in linguistics, teaching, research, and more. Bottom line—we want to prepare you not only to teach English, but to grow as a leader, researcher, and educator. You’ll find this degree could open up opportunities for positions such as lead teacher, division head, instructional coach, professional development facilitator, and program specialist.
