About the Program

If you're seeking the greatest understanding of the eye, how it works, and how it connects to everything else we do, a PhD in Vision Science could be the degree for you. We want to prepare you to work in industry, research, academia, and more.

The PhD curriculum here at UAB covers four themes: ocular biology, systems neuroscience, biomedical optics, and patient-based vision research. In addition to dissertation research, you'll take core courses that'll prepare you to give public presentations as well as conduct literature reviews. Your other required coursework will include Optics, Ocular Biology, Mechanisms of Ocular Disease, and Visual Neuroscience. You will also custom design a portion of your curriculum, working with your graduate committee to enroll in elective courses that match your particular research interests and career goals. Before you graduate, you'll publish at least one scientific article on your dissertation research that'll give you invaluable experience for your career.
