Rachel Daniel, undergraduate academic advisor in the School of Education, has been awarded a Certificate of Merit by NACADA, the Global Community for Academic Advising.

Daniel will be receiving the award in the category of Outstanding New Advisors, which “recognizes outstanding academic advisors or faculty advisors who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students and who have served as an advisor for a period of three (3) or fewer years.”

Daniel joined the UAB School of Education in 2015 and currently advises students majoring in Music Education, English Language Arts, General Social Science, and Community Health and Human Services. She also works part time as a writing tutor in the University Writing Center at UAB. Her previous experience in higher education included admissions, study abroad, freshman English composition instruction, and tutoring/mentoring for TRIO programs.

A native of Sand Mountain and resident of Birmingham, AL, Rachel graduated from the University of Montevallo with both a B.A. and M.A. in English. In her free time, she is an avid cyclist (Le Tour de Ham), an artist who creates with upcycled materials (The Upcycled Muse), and a volunteer for various local events and organizations. In her role as an academic advisor, Daniel says her philosophy is to “strive every day to be a genuine connector, mentor, listener, cultivator, encourager, guide, and advocate.”

Daniel will be recognized for her achievement during the NACADA Annual Awards Program for Academic Advising at the Global NACADA conference in the fall.
