Did African American educators in Birmingham support or detract from the Civil Rights Movement? In her new book, Schoolhouse Activists: African American Educators and the Long Birmingham Civil Rights Movement, Tondra Loder-Jackson, Ph.D., (Educational Foundations) tries to answer that question as she examines the role African American educators played during the civil rights struggle in Birmingham. She also gives readers an overview of the history of education in Birmingham, from the founding of city’s first African American school in the late 1800s to segregation, integration, No Child Left Behind and the modern school reform movement.
