The Association for Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) highlighted the University of Alabama at Birmingham in a publication that recognizes top-performing colleges and universities for sustainability impact.
The 2020 Sustainable Campus Index features UAB’s Urban Multisource Microgrid, a neighborhood that showcases UAB Sustainability’s Solar House, a completely net-positive house located on 11th Ave South. The house, originally called the UAB Surviv(AL) solar house, was built for the 2017 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon competition.
The UAB Urban Multisource Microgrid is one step of many the team is taking to achieve its Sustainability Strategic Plan. The plan sets out many overarching aims, among them “to provide sustainability education and programs for a broad regional, national, and international community.”
UAB currently holds a rating of Silver on AASHE’s Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) system. STARS is a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance..
