Beginning Wednesday, April 9, the northern most lane of University Boulevard will be closed to traffic between 15th and 18th streets south for two months. Review the Volker Hall Construction Impacts map for details.

Facilities is closing this traffic lane to make space for construction of the new Volker Hall atrium, which will open in July. This project will create a better, more accessible entrance to Volker Hall, as well as visually enhancing the space.

As a reminder, there are other construction-related impacts around Volker Hall. This map is the best visual representation of these impacts. Due to the atrium project, ongoing interior renovations, and an upcoming roof project, these locations are impacted:

  • The sidewalk along the north side of University Boulevard, near the intersection of 16th Street South will remain closed for the duration of the atrium project.
    • Both University Boulevard ground-level entrances to Volker Hall remain open.
  • Both 16th Street South crosswalks across University Boulevard are closed.
  • Street parking and the sidewalk along the south side of 7th Avenue South between 16th Street South and Lot 8 will remain closed through the fall.
    • A temporary crosswalk will be constructed across 7th Avenue near the Central Utilities building to provide a pedestrian route around this construction area.

Additionally, 7th Avenue remains closed to all vehicle traffic in front of the new UAB Rehabilitation Pavilion. This section of 7th Avenue is expected to reopen in May.

As with all campus construction projects, Facilities is intentional about placing signage to ensure drivers and pedestrians are notified before they reach an impacted area. Our team cares deeply about the safety of our faculty, staff, students, and visitors, and works proactively to notify our campus and community about construction-related traffic impacts. We always encourage pedestrians to cross at designated crosswalks as they navigate around any construction site.
