“When Nancy needed a kidney, I mean, who wouldn’t give Nancy a kidney? I guess I did it because I could. And she needed it.
“Unfortunately we weren’t a match but we pressed on with this. She kept asking me, ‘Are you sure?’ But it was an easy decision—a very easy decision. Even though my kidney wouldn’t go to her, she was still going to get one, and that was all I needed to hear.
“I was actually embarrassed that I wasn’t a match for her. I wanted to donate to her. But in hindsight, I think there’s a lot more pressure to donate to a family member, just in case something happened where you couldn’t donate.
“My hope for Nancy is that she gets her life back, that she gets her Saturdays back and gets to spend quality time with her kids and her husband. I told her that now that she’s going to have a good kidney, I would expect to see her around quite often. She promised that I would. I’m going to hold her to it.”
