Dr. Sakawi joined UAB as an Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellow in 1997. He is Board Certified in Anesthesiology.  He joined the UAB Anesthesiology faculty as Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology in 1998. He is currently Professor of Anesthesiology and Medical Director of Obstetric Anesthesiology. Dr. Sakawi is also the Chief of Anesthesiology at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. Dr. Sakawi is also Board Certified in Medical Quality.

Dr. Sakawi works closely with Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Nursing, Cardiology and Neonatology in multidisciplinary approaches to improve quality, patient safety and satisfaction for pregnant women seeking care at UAB.
