At graduation on June 2, the CA-3 residents made a surprise announcement: the launch of the campaign to establish the Susan Black, M.D., Endowed Lectureship in Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine
Named for Program Director Dr. Susan Black, who has overseen the residency program for 11 years, the initial contribution has been made with 100 percent participation of the graduating class of 2017’s CA-3s, plus an additional gift from Dr. and Mrs. Keith A. (Tony) Jones.
Once established, the fund will support an annual lecture series devoted to topics relevant to anesthesiology education.
“To say that Dr. Black has been an outstanding clinician, leader, and resident advocate during her time at UAB would be an understatement,” said Chief Resident Michelle Tubinis, M.D. “As her chief residents, Michael Chestnut, Chris Blakely, and I have had the privilege of working very closely with her for the past year and all feel that she is an unspoken mentor for each of us in leadership and integrity, a sentiment that is undoubtedly echoed throughout our class.”
The department has pledged to match donations up to 50 percent of the goal of raising $100,000. Accordingly, starting with the initial gift, we have already raised nearly $15,000 toward our goal. To donate or learn more, contact Amy Gibbs at acgibbs@uabmc.edu or 205-975-8603.
