PHusseyHSThe following is a message from Alfred Habeeb Professor and Chair Dan Berkowitz, M.D.

Colleagues,

It is with much enthusiasm that I announce that Patrick Hussey, M.D., has been appointed to serve as the Director of Clinical Faculty Assignments and Scheduling for the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.

Dr. Hussey received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Iowa in 2016. He completed his anesthesia residency at Columbia University, followed by a cardiac anesthesia fellowship here at UAB, after which he joined the faculty. Dr. Hussey quickly established himself as a valuable member of the liver transplant section in MSA, as well as in cardiac anesthesia. He is the ultimate team player, always optimistic and jumping at any opportunity that avails itself to serve the department.

Hussey will assume the responsibilities of Sandy Sipe, M.D., in the next three to six months, assuring a smooth transition. Dr. Sipe has led the scheduling enterprise for the last six years. She has done this with grace, fairness, attention to detail, and as much empathy as is possible in this incredibly challenging job. She steered us magnificently through COVID when schedules were changing daily. She was unflappable. Indeed, the department and all faculty owe a tremendous debt of gratitude for a tough job so well done.

We are all acutely aware that effective and thoughtful scheduling can have a tremendously positive impact on our lives, our wellness, and our attitudes toward our work. It is for this reason, that as part of this leadership transition, we will convene a taskforce that will help us think about new and innovative ways in which we can make scheduling even better.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Hussey in his new role. His humility, positivity, calm and steady demeanor, and affable nature, as well as his expanding knowledge of the operations of a number of divisions, make him an ideal candidate for this challenging position.

Sincerely,
Dan B.
