Why did you choose anesthesiology as a your speciality?

I initially had a difficult time choosing a specialty because I enjoyed so many rotations in medical school. Anesthesia was one of my last rotations, and I discovered that the field had a unique assortment of many different experiences and skills that I felt would make me a well-rounded physician.

What are the challenges you face in residency?

Time management is always a challenge for residents, and having a family has made that an even higher priority.

What do you do for fun?

I enjoy spending time with my family, eating at all the good restaurants in Birmingham, and playing golf.

Why did you choose UAB for anesthesia residency?

I chose UAB because of the opportunities the program offered to grow as a professional and an individual. I felt an immediate connection to the people in the program when I visited for my interview and knew that I would have great people to work with and spend time with outside of residency.

What are your plans after finishing your residency?

I hope to pursue a pain fellowship.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you to better prepare you to be chief resident?

There will be many situations you will not initially know what to do or how to respond. Luckily there are plenty of great resources, including co-chiefs, past chiefs, and faculty, to reach out to for guidance.

What do you think are the qualities or characteristics of a good anesthesiologist?

I think many different characteristics make a good anesthesiologist, and each person can bring a separate set of those qualities to the team. Several traits that I have seen to be helpful are patience and the ability to be a leader when the situation calls for it, while at the same time being a team player.
