Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Yasser Sakawi, M.D., to interim vice chair of the Division of Obstetric Anesthesiology in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, effective July 1, 2024, for one year.
Dr. Sakawi received his Master of Science (Biochemistry) from Menoufia University and Doctor of Medicine from Cairo University, both in Egypt. Following these degrees, he completed his residency at Albany Medical Center and numerous fellowships at prestigious institutions including the University of Bordeaux (research), University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (research, transplant surgery), UAB (obstetric anesthesiology), and Veterans Health Administration (leadership VA).
Dr. Sakawi has exemplified strong leadership attributes in a multitude of clinical positions. At the Birmingham VA Health Care System, he serves as chief anesthesiologist, associate chief of staff, as well as OR director. He also guides the educational mission within the system as a professor and chief of the residency program at the VA. Additionally, Dr. Sakawi is a member of both national committees and local advisory boards, all with the goal of improving quality and patient safety.
With Dr. Sakawi’s transition into this interim role, we must recognize Michelle Tubinis, M.D., as she departs to pursue new career opportunities. Dr. Tubinis has been a true asset to our department—not only as interim vice chair, but also as the former chief resident in our residency program, faculty scheduler, and educational leader.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Sakawi and honoring Dr. Tubinis for their invaluable contributions to our department.
Sincerely,
Dan E. Berkowitz, M.D.
