The UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center recognizes February as Heart Month. The very first Heart Month was celebrated in February 1964, as declared by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Heart health and diabetes management go hand-in-hand– a healthy heart can make all the difference in managing diabetes. Having diabetes can complicate overall heart health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) adults with diabetes are twice as likely to have heart disease as people who do not have diabetes.
The CDC notes that "more than two in three people with diabetes have high blood pressure. Diabetes also raises triglycerides and LDL cholesterol." But, healthy heart habits can help to combat the elevated risk of cardiovascular disease for those who have diabetes. Not sure where to start? UAB has several heart healthy recipes available as well as a quick guide to diet and exercise habits that can help those with diabetes manage heart health.
Plus, there are a few events centered around the heart to check out during the month of February and beyond.
