19172 Clinic web

Our 1917 Clinic will relocate to a much larger space in Birmingham's Lakeview district late next year or possibly early 2021. As the largest HIV health care unit in Alabama and one of the country’s preeminent HIV clinics, 1917 cares for more than 3,600 active patients. The new clinic space will incorporate a full pharmacy, activity space for physical exercise and classes, as well as a resource center with access to computers and meeting space specifically designed for patient use.

More Good News for November 13, 2019

Associate Professor Mustafa Ahmed, MD, has been named Section Chief of Interventional Cardiology in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease. The Section is poised for a rich and robust phase of growth, especially in the areas of complex coronary procedures, structural/valvular interventions, and acute cardiogenic shock.

The Department extends its thanks to Drs. Britta Brott and Mark Sasse for their critical leadership during the interim period of transition for the Section, as well as the entire interventional faculty group for all of their work and effort. We look forward to the days ahead as UAB continues to build the best interventional and structural program in the Southeast and in the nation.

Professor Massoud Leesar, MD (Cardiovascular Disease) was invited to participate in the Cardiovascular Research Technologies 2020 Abstract Grading Committee. The CRT meeting is one of leading interventional conferences in the nation, with over 1,000 abstracts submitted every year. Congratulations, Dr. Leesar, and thanks for your service!

Professor Isabel Scarinci, PhD, MPH (Preventive Medicine) collaborated with UAB colleagues in a first-of-its-kind study that examined obesity and the relationship of five components of wealth. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, the complex findings suggest that wealth tends to decrease obesity for most races, except in Black males.

It takes a village to care for patients, and we are fortunate to work alongside talented and caring nurses every day. Dr. Joseph Granade, one of our first-year internal medicine residents, recently found a great way to highlight these exceptional colleagues by presenting Ashley Harrell with a special certificate of recognition for her work at the BVAMC. The Department is delighted to celebrate them both for their contributions to promote a positive working environment.

Amy Warriner, MD (Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism) recently received an implementation grant from the Alabama Department of Public Health to support a rollout of the National Diabetes Prevention Program at UAB.
