Patients living with HIV and opioid use disorder can more easily find appropriate and compassionate treatment in the UAB's new Outpatient-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) Clinic, located within the 1917 Clinic. Infectious Diseases faculty Drs. Ellen Eaton, Orlando Turner, and Jim Raper have led the implementation of this clinic to provide access to the full spectrum of care specific to patients’ underlying medical issues, such as HIV and other infections, as well as specialized treatment for their opioid use disorder.

The society was founded by Dr. Tinsley Harrison in 1947. Past-Presidents include Drs. Paul Beeson, Gene Stead, Arthur Guyton, Don Seldin, Grant Little, and many more greats of American medicine. Abolfazl Zarjou, PhD (Assistant Professor, Nephrology) has received the ASCI's 2020 Young Physician-Scientist Award. This award recognizes Dr. Zarjou's contribution to research focused on the iron metabolism/ferritin system in the context of acute kidney injury and vascular diseases. (His research is currently supported by a K08 and SSCI research scholar award.) We salute you, Dr. Zarjou.
