Biography

Sarah Nafziger, MD, MSHA is a Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Neurology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She is dual board certified in Emergency Medicine and EMS.

Dr Nafziger currently serves as the Vice-President of Clinical Support Services for UAB Medicine and is responsible for physician oversight for the UAB Center for Patient Flow, which manages patient flow through all areas of the hospital, and serves as an integral member of the strategic planning team for managing capacity to care for patients in the UAB Health System. Throughout her career she was worked extensively in Disaster Preparedness and response, overseeing Emergency Preparedness activities for UAB Medicine. In addition, she serves as the Medical Director for UAB Employee Health, and is responsible for maintaining medical readiness for the UAB Medicine workforce.

Previously, Dr Nafziger has served as the Assistant State EMS Medical Director for the Alabama Department of Public Health where she worked on implementation of regionalized specialty systems of care for time-dependent illness and injury, disaster preparedness including the Ebola response, and EMS protocol development. She is past president of the Alabama ACEP Chapter and has also served as a medical officer in the US Army Reserve and the Alabama Air National Guard.
