Green Tea JBC Cover PageDr. Jeonga Kim and colleagues recently published a paper in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Dr. Kim's paper was featured as the August 2, 2013 Paper of the Week. The Cover Page of this JBC issue featured this work and was actually designed by Dr. Kim's daughter!

Dr. Kim's
laboratory investigates the impact of vascular endothelial function on diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. One focus of her studies is to investigate the effects of green tea polyphenol, also known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), on the physiology of vascular endothelial cells. Her group discovered that EGCG enhanced autophagy which results in reduced accumulation of intracellular lipid droplets. These findings may suggest that green tea regulates lipid metabolism in vasculature, which may in turn affect cardiovascular function. Green tea may be a potential therapeutic reagent to prevent cardiovascular complications.
