The Department of Family and Community Medicine is proud to announce the promotion of Assistant Professor Steven Brown, M.D., to the position of Chief of Sports & Exercise Medicine, Family and Community Medicine. The promotion not only recognizes Brown's exceptional skills and dedication but also heralds a new era of opportunities and advancements for the Sports and Exercise Medicine service line within the department.
"I am humbled and thrilled to be selected for this position. I am excited to embark on this journey and build upon the great foundation and rich history of Sports Medicine at UAB," says Steven Brown, M.D.
"I am deeply enthusiastic about the future of our sports medicine program, as our recent clinical expansion represents a significant milestone in our commitment to advancing the field of sports medicine and improving the lives of our patients."
Brown's journey at UAB began in 2010 as a Heersink School of Medicine student, where he excelled and graduated with his Doctorate of Medicine in 2014. His passion for Sports Medicine led him to complete his Family Medicine residency and his Sports Medicine fellowship at the University of Lousiville. Brown then honed his skills as a Sports Medicine physician at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics in Memphis, Tennessee, for approximately four years. In the fall of 2022, he returned to UAB as an assistant professor, bringing him a wealth of experience and knowledge.
Brown is part of a team providing coverage to UAB Athletics, the United Football League's (UFL) Birmingham Stallions, Birmingham Legion FC, USA Wheelchair Rugby, Birmingham Bulls Hockey, Birmingham Vulcan Rugby, Birmingham City School Athletics, and previously served as team doctor for the former USFL's New Orleans Breakers.
"My goal as Chief is to amplify our scope of services, incorporating state-of-the-art diagnostics, innovative injury prevention strategies, treatment modalities, and evidence-based protocols tailored to meet the unique needs of our patients and athletes across diverse disciplines and skill levels."
Brown will be working to enhance UAB's Sports and Exercise Medicine program alongside other Sports Medicine Chiefs: Amit Momaya, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Dale Colorado, D.O., Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine partners with community sports organizations to help care for their athletes.
