Faculty and students in the UAB Department of Family and Community Medicine's Comprehensive Urban Underserved and Rural Experience (CU2RE) program traveled to Tampa this week to present at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Annual Meeting. 

Designed to focus on opportunities and challenges in family medicine education, the conference attracts more than 1,500 family medicine professionals annually and includes more than 500 educational and interactive seminars, lecture-discussions, papers, and poster presentations.

Family and Community faculty and students led four sessions, including: 

  • A project presentation, "Module-Based Curriculum That Fills Gaps in Medical School Training to Prepare Students to Care for Underserved Patients," led by Jill Marsh, M.D., director of CU2RE's Urban Underserved and Rural Pathways; Instructional Designer Jon Ezell, Ph.D.; and CU2RE students Katie McMillan and Claire Wilson
  • A project presentation, "Impact of Innovative Early Clinical Experiences on Interest in Underserved, Primary Care Careers," led by Marsh and CU2RE students Hana Habchi, Kristina Redd and Channing Bruce
  • A roundtable discussion, "Building Student Competence in Patient Health Advocacy Through Cultural Awareness and Interprofessional Collaboration," led by Kala Dixon, Ph.D., director of the Office of Interprofessional and Continuing Education; Shyla K. Fields, MBA, director of the Office of Identity, Inclusion and Collective Conscience; and Adrienne Fowler-Payne, MPA, CU2RE program director. 
  • A seminar, "Training Primary Care Physicians to Manage Patients With Depression Through ECHO Model," led by Assistant Professor Kimberly Smith, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Clerkship Director, and Cahaba-UAB Highlands Track Family Medicine Residency Director B. Earl Salser, Jr., M.D., and Christina Pierpaoli Parker, Ph.D.

Habchi also presented a poster, "The Relationship Between Home Food Availability, Weight Status, and Income in Low-Income Households"

Cahaba-UAB Highlands Family Medicine resident Omosefe Ogbeifun, M.D., was also honored as a receipient of the 2023 Faculty for Tomorrow Resident Scholarship, which includes workshops and conference attendance. 

Assistant Professor Minakshi Shukla, M.D., was amed incoming chair for the STFM New Faculty Collaborative.
