Hana Habchi GS Award Family Medicine Clerkship Director Sameera Davuluri, MD, joins Hana Habchi, MD, at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Class of 2024 Student Awards Banquet.

The Department of Family and Community Medicine awarded its annual G. Gayle Stephens, MD, Award for Excellence in Family Medicine to CU2RE graduate Hana Habchi, MD. A native of Madison, Ala., Habchi will soon begin her Family Medicine residency at the University of California in San Francisco.

Each year, the department selects one medical student who stands out for excellence in interpersonal relationships, professionalism, academic performance and leadership. This individual also exhibits a strong desire to pursue a career in family medicine.

The award is presented in honor of G. Gayle Stephens, MD, a pioneer in family medicine and the founder of one of the first 12 Family Practice residencies in the country in 1969. He later served as the first Dean of the School of Primary Medical Care at Huntsville, Ala., and was chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. After his retirement in 1988, Stephens became a Professor Emeritus of Family and Community Medicine. Despite his death in 2014, his legacy of investment and impact on family medicine continues.
