The UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine team is an official medical provider of the United States Football League for their second consecutive season. The team will provide coverage to two teams this season, the Birmingham Stallions and the New Orleans Breakers, which are both playing in Birmingham at Protective Stadium.
This renewed partnership between the USFL and UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine includes on and off-field sports medicine coverage, completing pre-season and post-season physicals and providing players treatment for any concussions, cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine issues and other illnesses and injuries.
Members of the UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine team will support the team through sideline coverage, concussion spotting and other sports medicine care medical care.

This collaboration not only allows our team of providers and sports medicine fellows to work with a top-tier professional sports organization, but also provides an opportunity for us to offer comprehensive care to athletes, including concussion, cardiac care, nutrition, mental health, trauma, emergency care, and more,” said Irfan Asif., M.D., chair of the department of family and community medicine and a senior medical advisor for the league. “We are excited about the potential for increased sports medicine partnerships and look forward to contributing to the success of the USFL."
Asif will participate in the USFL Medical Advisory Committee, made up of seven members from a variety of health-related disciplines. Drs. Calvin Spellmon and Steven Brown will help lead team coverage for the Birmingham and New Orleans teams respectively.
Last season, the UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine team provided coverage to four USFL teams at the Birmingham city-hub including the New Orleans Breakers, the Houston Gamblers, the Pittsburgh Maulers and the Philadelphia Stars.
