The UAB Department of Microbiology is proud to have a chapter in the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).

As one of the largest professional life science organizations globally, ASM provides a platform for microbial scientists to connect, learn, discover, and prepare for the future. The ASM UAB chapter’s goals are (1) to promote student interest and further improve the quality of all microbiology programs at UAB (2) to provide aid for students in microbiology programs at UAB with respect to academic curricula, research, networking, professional development, leadership and resource sharing and (3) to promote student participation in the local, state, and national ASM meetings.

The chapter, home to about 40 members, hosts an event every month throughout the fall and spring semesters. These events aim to build relationships and provide information and career opportunities for students. They have collaborated with multiple other student organizations such as GRADient and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society.

“Whether it’s making science-themed friendship bracelets or sitting in on career panels for National Women’s History Month, every experience has been rewarding,” said Jessica Lane, President of the American Society for Microbiology’s UAB chapter and graduate student in the UAB Department of Microbiology. “Being involved with ASM at UAB has been a great experience. I have truly enjoyed planning events that our students will appreciate and feel supported by.”
