Blazing Dragon AwardAmarshi Mukherjee, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Microbiology, recently received the Blazing Dragon Award from the Office of Postdoctoral Education for his involvement in the Dokland Lab. This award reflects a lone postdoc contributor's unique role in their lab, blazing a trail with their unique insights and efforts.

The lab, which uses a hybrid approach combining cryo-EM and three-dimensional reconstruction with other biochemical and biophysical approaches to study the structures of viruses, bacteria and proteins involved in viral and bacterial pathogenicity, originally had a mid-sized team. By 2024, Mukherjee found himself the only person in the lab. Despite this challenge the lab continued to be productive and is actively recruiting new trainees.

Mukherjee shares his thoughts on the significance of this award.

What does it mean to you to receive this award?

Mukherjee: I consider this award very prestigious because I was nominated by faculty members who are either collaborators or who know us well and understand our situation. It reflects the outstanding collaborative environment and supportive atmosphere at UAB. This award also encourages me on my journey toward independence and I believe it will be beneficial for my career advancement.

Do you attribute your success to anyone specific?

Mukherjee: I am deeply grateful to my supervisor, Dr. Terje Dokland, who wholeheartedly nominated me for the award and has always believed in my ability to lead the lab. In addition to his mentorship, the supportive environment in our lab fosters the best in every individual.

Anything else you'd like to add?

Mukherjee: I truly appreciate the working environment of the Department of Microbiology. Even though I was alone in the lab for a few months, I never felt isolated. I regularly connected with others in the department and enjoyed every seminar and social gathering. Interacting with other faculty, students, and postdocs kept me engaged and active. We are currently rebuilding our group and hope to find amazing people who will enjoy working in the Dokland Lab.
