The UAB Department of Neurology welcomed Matthew McCay, M.D. to the faculty as an assistant professor in July 2024.
McCay earned his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Alabama. He then pursued his medical education at UAB where he also recently completed his residency in neurology.
McCay reflects on his passion for medicine and expresses his enthusiasm for this new role.
What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?
McCay: During medical school, my neurology rotation was the most enjoyable and engaging experience. This rotation not only solidified my interest in neurology but also provided me with a deep sense of fulfillment and excitement about my future career in this field.
What aspects of your new role here are you most excited about?
McCay: My passion for teaching is the primary reason I chose to pursue a career in academia. I am excited about the opportunity to work with medical students and residents, guiding them through their educational journey and sharing my knowledge and experiences.
What is your primary area of expertise, and what sparked your passion for it?
McCay: I am currently practicing general neurology and truly appreciate the breadth of the field. Working with a range of patients allows me to broaden my differential diagnosis skills, especially when dealing with more complex cases.
What are your goals for making an impact through both your teaching and patient care in this role?
McCay: I aim to inspire a passion for general neurology among our residents and help them approach patients with a broader and more comprehensive knowledge base, which will ultimately benefit patient care.
