Sushmita Bhandari, M.D., PGY1, joined the UAB Department of Neurology in June 2024. A native of Nepal, Bhandari completed her undergraduate education in Nepal and pursued her medical degree at Fatima Jinnah Medical University in Lahore Pakistan.
“The adventurous trajectory of my life has brought me to the historic and vibrant city of Birmingham for my neurology training,” Bhandari said.

What do you look forward to about training in the UAB Department of Neurology and/or UAB in general?
Bhandari: I am thrilled to engage in a comprehensive training program that will equip me to be a compassionate and skillful neurologist and also be able to reach the unreached through our special teleneurology training as well. I am especially grateful to be under the mentorship of highly supportive colleagues and seasoned professionals, which I believe will greatly enrich my experience. The short time I have spent in Birmingham so far has made me realize that this is truly a "UAB city," a place where the university and community are deeply intertwined, creating a unique and welcoming environment.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
In my free time, you can find me exploring culinary adventures, whether in the kitchen, at a restaurant, or in a cozy coffee shop. I enjoy cooking for friends and family and constantly learning new recipes. I’m also passionate about outdoor activities like cycling, volleyball, and hiking.
What hobby or activity do you wish you had more time for?
I wish I had more time to go cycling and explore new trails and the whereabouts of this green city.
What is your favorite holiday, and why?
Christmas and Diwali are my favorite holidays. The lights and decorations create such a cozy and exciting atmosphere, filling the air with warmth and festive spirit.
