Eighteen outstanding faculty members were named recipients of the 2019 Dean’s Excellence Awards, an honor recognizing exceptional contributions made by School of Medicine faculty in service, teaching, research, diversity enhancement and mentorship.

Farah Lubin, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the NINDS Neuroscience Roadmap Scholar Program, has been selected to serve as a member of the Clinical Neuroplasticity and Neurotransmitters Study Section for the Center for Scientific Review.

Craig Powell, M.D., Ph.D., has been named chair of the Department of Neurobiology at the UAB School of Medicine as well as director of the Civitan International Research Center.
The award honors his distinguished contributions to neuroscience, particularly for discovery of gliotransmission.
These results, seen in animal models, represent a potentially novel therapeutic target for the treatment of seizure disorders.
Pozzo-Miller works on brain penetrant drug research to improve brain performance in Rett syndrome mice. 
Vladimir Parpura, M.D., Ph.D., will serve as a corresponding member for the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
