UAB is adding another tool to its IT toolbox. Faculty, researchers, and trainees will have access to BioRender Premium, effective immediately. This user-friendly, web-based tool helps users create high quality scientific figures quickly and efficiently.
Making BioRender Premium accessible for our entire academic community underscores the institutional commitment to supporting innovative research. This tool will enhance the quality and efficiency of our scientific communications. The program, which is already being used in multiple areas across campus, creates scientific illustrations, graphs, and posters to enhance visual communication. BioRender offers a library of more than 50,000 scientifically accurate, expert-validated life science icons and templates and operates with a simple drag-and-drop functionality.
The addition of this resource will save time and improve the clarity and impact of UAB research. Including quality, accurate images in academic and research work is essential for several reasons. These visuals help to convey complex scientific concepts and data clearly, making it easier for broad audiences to understand the research findings. Effective communication through well designed images can highlight key points, show relationships between data, and illustrate processes in a way that words alone cannot. This not only enhances the clarity and impact of the research but also engages the audience, making the work more memorable and easier to share.
Moreover, accurate images ensure the reliability and credibility of the information presented, which is crucial in scientific research. Better visuals also facilitate collaboration by providing a common understanding of the research, especially in multidisciplinary teams. Enhancing images in research work underscores the importance of precision and effective communication, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and innovation.
Training
To introduce the tool’s functionality, BioRender will be hosting two webinars, exclusively for UAB. While the knowledge base of program users ranges from beginner to well-versed, it is recommended that all users attend an upcoming “101 training,” as new and refreshed features have been released. The one-hour webinar includes a brief introduction to the BioRender software, and attendees will gain valuable insights and practical techniques for creating compelling science figures. The session will also provide an overview of the BioRender platform including an introduction to several features.
Users can also visit the Learning Hub to learn more about BioRender features.

New users
All individuals currently at UAB are eligible for access. Click here to sign up for the University license. New users will be able to access BioRender at no cost initially, but it’s expected that some individual schools will formulate a charge recapture system. After the initial six-month pilot period, an annual cost of approximately $195 per license should be anticipated.
Existing users
If you have an existing BioRender account with files that you need access to, please do not create a new account. You can change your email in your BioRender account to your UAB institutional email by following these instructions. Once you have changed your email, please ensure you are linking this account to the University's subscription. Click here to migrate it to the University's license. Through the University’s license, existing users will have access to BioRender at no direct cost initially, but users should expect to pay approximately $195 per license after the six-month pilot phase.
