In February, the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science welcomed new faculty Assistant Professor Jiancheng Ye, Ph.D.

Originally from China, Ye received training in biomedical engineering at Tsinghua University in Beijing. He later completed a master’s degree in health informatics from Johns Hopkins University before pursing his Ph.D. at Feinberg School of Medicine.

His current research focuses on using large cohorts, health data, and advanced technology to better understand chronic diseases and the factors that contribute to them, with the goal of improving patient outcomes and access to care.

Ye joined UAB for its strong reputation in healthcare, life sciences, and many other fields. “The Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science focuses on applied research and its connections with UAB's clinical and research facilities provide excellent opportunities to gain practical experience and resources for careers in the rapidly growing field of biomedical informatics,” said Ye.

Ye plans to collaborate across UAB to apply innovative informatics solutions to advance biomedical research. This includes advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning applications in health care, enhancing natural language processing techniques for medical data, and contributing to bioinformatics research to improve patient outcomes.

He also plans to work closely with the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) to advance the use of bioinformatics and clinical research informatics in research. This partnership will help biomedical researchers improve their work and provide opportunities to contribute to their own research and find solutions to various challenges in the field.

Outside of his academic and research work, Ye enjoys hiking and exploring the outdoors.
