Mona Fouad, M.D., MPH, senior associate dean of Diversity and Inclusion and director of the UAB Division of Preventive Medicine, has been selected as a recipient of the 2016 President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition Community Leadership Award. This award is given annually to individuals or organizations that improve the lives of individuals within a community by providing or enhancing opportunities to engage in sports, physical activity, fitness or nutrition-related programs.
Fouad receives the award in recognition of her work in improving the health of racial/ethnic minorities and underserved communities through the creation of UAB HealthSmart. An initiative of the UAB Division of Preventive Medicine, UAB HealthSmart works to help everyone living and working in Birmingham to find simple, achievable ways to improve their health – free of charge.
Since its opening in 2011, UAB HealthSmart has provided one-stop services such as health risk assessment, biometric evaluation, nutrition and exercise counseling, physical activity programs and education sessions to more than 2,800 clients.
