Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., F.A.C.S., senior vice president for Medicine and dean of the UAB School of Medicine, was recently named president-elect of the Southern Surgical Association (SSA).
Vickers, who joined UAB as dean of the School of Medicine in October 2013, is a professor of Surgery in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. Vickers has served in leadership roles in many professional surgical organizations, most recently as president of the Society of Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) and chairman of its Board of Trustees.
He was named to the leadership role at the SSA’s 128th annual meeting Dec. 4-7 in Palm Beach, Florida.
Founded in 1887 in Birmingham, the Southern Surgical Association has more than 700 surgical professions actively practicing in surgery or a surgical sub-specialty. SSA members are elected to the group based on distinguished service in surgical research, prominence in clinical surgery, leadership and medical education.
