Steven H. Lipstein, chief executive officer of BJC HealthCare will present “The Future of Academic Medicine: Rosy or Rocky?” as the keynote speaker for the 2017 Leadership in Academic Medicine Lecture series, sponsored by UAB Medicine.
Lipstein’s presentation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 7 at the Hill University Center Alumni Theater, located on the third floor of the Hill University Center, 1400 University Boulevard. A limited number of breakfasts are provided for attendees.
The keynote will be streaming live online beginning at 8 a.m.
Spanning four decades, Lipstein’s education and professional career has taken him from Emory University to Duke University for college and graduate school respectively, to Massachusetts General Hospital, John Hopkins Hospital, the University of Chicago Hospitals and now to BJC HealthCare, where he has served as chief executive officer since 1999.
Lipstein serves as Executive Board chair of the BJC Collaborative, an eight health system organization spanning Eastern Kansas, all of Missouri and Southern Illinois. Lipstein also serves on the St. Louis Regional Health Commission and sits on the board of the Missouri Hospital Association. BJC HealthCare serves patients and their families in urban, suburban and rural communities through its 15 hospitals and other health-services organizations.
In 2013, he was named St. Louis Citizen of the Year, an award presented by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch to a St-Louisan who serves the community with distinction. In 2014, he was elected for membership in the National Academy of Medicine
Sponsored by UAB Medicine, the Leadership in Academic Medicine Lecture series brings high-profile leaders to Birmingham to discuss issues facing UAB and other prominent academic medical centers across all missions. Previous keynote speakers include Darrell Kirch, M.D., CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges; Peter L. Slavin, M.D., president of Massachusetts General Hospital; and Paul B. Rothman, M.D., dean of the medical faculty and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
