Marisa Marques, M.D., professor in the Department of Pathology, is one of two senior faculty members to win the Dean's Excellence Award in Teaching
A native of Brazil, Marques received her medical degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the same institution. She moved to the United States with her husband in 1986 to become a Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, for 2 years. After that, she continued working as a fellow at Harvard Medical School. In 1993, she and her husband relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, where she completed a residency in Pathology and a fellowship in Hematopathology at UAB. Marques is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, with subspecialties in Hematology and Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking. In addition to being a professor, she serves as medical director of Transfusion Services. In the clinical arena, Marques is particularly interested in improving appropriateness of utilization of blood products and laboratory tests.
