UAB Graduate Medical Education welcomed 189 new residents and fellows Wednesday, June 19, during an orientation session in the West Pavilion Atrium.
The new residents and fellows were welcomed by institutional leaders and attended multiple presentations and training sessions to prepare them for their training at UAB. They learned about health care disparities in the state of Alabama, diversity and inclusion and other priorities of UAB Medicine. They also participated in an AIDET training session that familiarized them with UAB’s patient communication framework.
“I’m excited to finally practice what I want to do for the rest of my life. Everyone here is really nice, and the program leadership is awesome,” said Paige Schroder, M.D., an incoming resident from Cincinnati specializing in anesthesiology, who received her medical doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. “I’m excited that we have a lot of strong women leadership in the Department of Anesthesiology. That’s not the case in a lot of anesthesia programs.”
Alice Goepfert, M.D., associate dean for Graduate Medical Education, and Brenessa Lindeman, M.D., associate designated institutional official for Graduate Medical Education, welcomed the trainees to begin the orientation day.
Other presentations throughout the day covered pharmacy policies and procedures, medical office priorities and quality initiatives, and UAB’s risk management policies.“UAB is a large institution that has so many great opportunities. That was the biggest reason why I chose to come here,” said Marquis Griffin, M.D., an Augusta, Georgia, native specializing in internal medicine, who earned his medical doctorate from the Morehouse School of Medicine. “I felt really comfortable with the faculty and staff that I met during my interview process.”
Montgomery native William Davis, M.D., chose UAB because of the opportunity to gain a wealth of experience. “We have really high patient acuity, so that provides a lot of great experience,” said Davis, a UAB School of Medicine graduate who specializes in orthopaedic surgery. “I’m excited to finally get to do what I’ve been preparing for the past four years.”
