UAB Medicine celebrated 16 women who have recently earned their professorship, and 19 women who have been promoted to the rank of associate professor at a reception Nov. 6. It was held in the Partridge Atrium of the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Reception attendees enjoyed hors d’ouevres and networking before a welcome speech by Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., FACS, senior vice president for Medicine and dean of the School of Medicine. Vickers congratulated the women on their achievements and noted the expanding role of women in medicine. “When we first began celebrating the promotion of our women faculty five years ago,” he said, “there were five women promoted to the rank of full professor. Today, there are 16.”
Mona Fouad, M.D., MPH, senior associate dean for Diversity and Inclusion, also addressed those assembled. She discussed the amount of dedication and commitment each of the faculty had displayed in ascending the heights of their career.
Each woman promoted to the rank of professor was honored individually with a short video, and each woman’s departmental chair outlined her achievements. Each professor and associate professor was then given a certificate to celebrate their career milestone.
